MPs to debate the stamp duty holiday extension – watch live!

You may have read our recent blog ‘It’s confirmed, MPs to debate Stamp Duty as Chancellor considers extension’ which explains what the stamp duty holiday is and reported about the official petition which called for the stamp duty holiday to be extended.

Official petition

This parliamentary e-petition was set up, calling for the Stamp Duty holiday deadline to be extended. The petition called ‘Extend the Stamp Duty Holiday for an additional 6 months after 31st March 2021’ has now reached almost 130,000 signatures.

Stamp Duty Holiday debate

The House of Commons had confirmed there would be a debate about the Stamp Duty holiday, however this was delayed as Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of the House of Commons, last week temporarily suspended debates in Westminster Hall due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

MPs are now able to discuss the petition via a virtual 90-minute debate starting at 4.30pm on 1st February 2021. This session, led by Elliot Colburn, member of the Petitions Committee. Rt Hon Jesse Norman MP, financial secretary to the Treasury, will respond for the Government.

This debate will be broadcast live on Parliament TV and on YouTube – will you be watching? If you miss the debate you can read a transcript of the session which will also be published.
